Sinus Lift Alternatives: How Zygomatic Implants Offer a Faster Solution
Patients who have lost teeth in the upper jaw often experience rapid bone resorption. The maxillary sinuses, located just above the upper premolars and molars, expand downwards as the bone shrinks. When these patients seek dental implants, they are frequently met with bad news: "You need a sinus lift."
A sinus lift (sinus augmentation) is a procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw by lifting the sinus membrane. While effective, it is highly invasive and dramatically extends the treatment timeline. Fortunately, modern maxillofacial surgery offers a robust alternative: Zygomatic Implants.
The Drawbacks of Sinus Lifts
A sinus lift is considered a pre-prosthetic surgery. The drawbacks include:
- Timeline: After the bone graft is placed under the sinus membrane, the patient must wait 6 to 9 months for the graft to solidify before implants can be placed. Total treatment time often exceeds one year.
- Morbidity: The procedure involves significant swelling and carries risks such as sinus membrane perforation or graft infection.
- No Immediate Teeth: During the prolonged healing period, the patient is often forced to wear a removable temporary denture.
The Zygomatic Alternative
Instead of trying to build bone where it has been lost, zygomatic implantology bypasses the deficient upper jaw entirely. Zygomatic implants are specially designed, extra-long implants that anchor into the dense zygomatic bone (the cheekbone).
Because the cheekbone is exceptionally strong, it provides massive primary stability. This allows us to achieve two critical outcomes:
- Eliminate the Graft: We bypass the sinuses entirely, meaning no sinus lift and no bone grafting are required.
- Same-Day Function: Due to the strong cheekbone anchorage, a fixed set of teeth can typically be attached within 24 hours of surgery.
Is This Approach Safe?
Zygomatic implants have been used successfully for decades. Clinical literature spanning 25 years demonstrates that zygomatic protocols yield success rates equal to or higher than conventional implants placed in grafted sinus bone.
However, placing zygomatic implants requires specialized oral surgery expertise and 3D CBCT diagnostic planning, which goes beyond the scope of general dentistry. If you have been told you require extensive sinus grafting, we recommend a second opinion to evaluate if you are a candidate for a graftless zygomatic solution.
